We are Greymatter, a British pop-rock band fronted by the charismatic Georgey Payne and Emma Kavanagh. Lighting up stages since 2004, we’ve built a reputation for electrifying performances that blend soaring vocal harmonies with high-energy rock anthems.
Over the years, our sound has evolved, and with the addition of a dynamic new drummer, we bring a fresh, contemporary twist to our signature style. Whether it’s an intimate wedding reception, a high-energy corporate event, or a major festival, we tailor each performance to the moment - switching between soulful acoustic sets and upbeat pop-rock hits that get everyone dancing.
We’ve released three self-produced albums and earned recognition along the way, including back-to-back "Best Band/Artist" awards at L Fest. Our touring history spans the UK, Europe, and beyond, with standout gigs at London Pride in Trafalgar Square, The Isle of Wight Festival, Brighton Pride, The Playhouse in Nottingham, St David's Hall in Cardiff, and many more. More recently, we’ve become the go-to band for private gigs and special events, bringing infectious energy and heartfelt lyrics that resonate with every crowd.

Georgey Payne
Lead and Backing Vocalist, Guitar, Songwriter
Music has been part of my life since I was 6 when my parents bought me a guitar. Coming from a musical family, they hoped I’d catch the music bug, and they were right! By 11, I was playing guitar, piano, and drums, writing songs, and recording them on an old tape deck…
I started gigging at 16, performing my own material in bands while also building a career in hairdressing. I met Emma in 2002, we started performing at events as a duo, covering artists like the Indigo Girls. This inspired me to write harmonised songs that suited us both. One year later in 2003, Greymatter was born…
My influences range from County Music to Folk/Rock, but my songwriting comes from life, people, and experiences. I want my music to be something everyone can relate to…
As well as being part of our band Greymatter, I recently made a return to working as a solo artist alongside the band. I also created The L Project and wrote the words, music and produced the 2 LGBT Charity Songs for The L Project, which had No 1 chart success in 4 different countries.
Emma Kavanagh
Lead and Backing Vocalist
I’m Emma, a founding member of Greymatter and the band’s lead and backing vocalist. Unlike my bandmates, music found me later in life. My early years were all about elite-level sports—until that chapter closed, and I started singing to fund my travels. What began as a side gig quickly turned into a passion. Winning competitions and performing in pubs became my way of life, and I loved every second of it.
In my early 20s, I met Georgey, and Greymatter was born. Since then, we’ve spent over half my life traveling the country and the world, making music together. For me, singing is a space of complete switch-off—there’s nothing I love more than entertaining a crowd while hanging out with some of my closest friends
Jinny Ursell
Keyboard
I joined Greymatter in 2014 and before that had never played in public before. When the opportunity came up, I took it - and I’ve never looked back. Playing live is an incredible buzz. The best bit is seeing the audience react to our music. Being part of a band with such talented people has been very inspiring, and it’s also been a great boost mentally. Music has a way of bringing people together, and I love being a part of that with our band.
While I’m the keyboard player, my music taste is all over the place - give me an 80s power ballad any day, but I also love dance tracks and retro tunes. Luckily, I’m with a band that doesn’t mind trying all those!
Joining Greymatter has been one of the highlights of my life. Whether it’s practicing or performing, it’s about making great music with great friends. We’ve had some amazing gigs over the years, and I can’t wait for what’s next.
Julie Boyce (Boycey)
Bass
A long time ago when I was five I was devastated to discover that Elvis had died. This tragic event moved me to impersonate the King with the aid of an upright vacuum cleaner. I've now moved on to a large mirror and a massive hair brush.
After a respectable period of mourning I realised the dials on the radio moved and that it wasn't all Arnold the dog and Radio 4! No! There was Abba and Odyssey and other disco acts that could bring music to life in a lycra wearing, glass ball kind of way. And who could forget the great Earth Wind and Fire? These masters of the dance floor, purveyors of the platform boot passionated my urge to reach out and seek the bass. It makes me emotional just thinking about it.
What can I say? I love music!
Now I'm playing in a band with more rhythm than the Jacksons, more dance routines than Agadoo, and more hair products than the Supremes. Greymatter, the only thing that could replace Elvis in my life! I love you guys.
Selina Robinson
Drums
I'm Selina - though most people call me Sel! I've been in love with drums since I was 11, working my way up to Grade 8 Trinity certification along the way. My drumming journey has taken me through all sorts of musical adventures, particularly in my early metal days when I toured across the UK and parts of Europe.
These days, I create my sound through a hybrid electro-acoustic kit or, a special spot in my setup for my Loota - a funny box-y Finnish acoustic drum. When it comes to music, I'm drawn to anything that makes me go "ooof" - there's no genre I won't explore if it hits right.
Although I am the baby of the Greymatter crew - they've given me the perfect musical playground where I can let my diverse influences shine. Every session with them satisfies my musical soul, and I'm excited to keep pushing our sound forward together.
